Biography

R. Tinkler was born in County Durham on the North East coast of England. After finishing his National Service with The Royal Armoured Corps, he graduated from The Sunderland College of Art with a National Diploma in Design (NDD) with a focus on painting, drawing and printmaking. The following year he qualified for his Art Teachers Diploma (ATD) from the Manchester Regional College of Art and an Art Teachers Certificate (ATC) from The Royal Victoria University of Manchester.

He then spent the next two and a half decades as an Art Educator, holding positions in London, The Bahamas, El Salvador, Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Manila before returning to the UK.

His work - a product of more than half a century of study and practice - is figurative and expressionistic and draws inspiration from artists such as Chaïm Soutine, Paul Gauguin, Joan Eardley, Willem De Kooning, Maurice Utrillo, André Derain, Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Frank Auerbach, Max Beckmann and Leon Kossoff.

Now retired from his professional career, he paints in his studio in Sunderland, and regularly exhibits his work around the North East as a member of The Sunderland Art Club and as a friend of The Hatton Gallery in Newcastle. His work is part of private collections around the world, including The UK & Ireland, The USA, Australia, Central America and South East Asia.
